Hybrid boat batteries are used in boats that can get their power either from a fuelled power source (like a diesel engine) or via a stored energy source (such as a battery bank and electric motor).

The hybrid system works on the same basis as a generator, whereby the power unit is placed between the engine and the hydraulic pump that drives the boat. The propeller is driven by diesel propulsion, allowing the hybrid system to recharge the 48 volt drive batteries. Then, when the diesel engine is turned off, the electric engine from the 48 volt drive batteries is driven by electric propulsion.

The energy is controlled and converted independently by an electronic management unit and can be used to either power the electric motor or to recharge the batteries. The hybrid power unit is driven through a centrifugal clutch when using the diesel engine and so acts like a generator. It can then work as an electric motor to propel the boat instead of using the engine.

Types of Hybrid Configuration

There are three main types of hybrid configurations for boats: diesel/electric, serial hybrid and parallel hybrid, though there are a lot of variations. The best choice of hybrid configuration will depend on the type of boat and how it is used.

As well as the environmental and cost benefits, here are additional advantages to using a hybrid system. For instance having both types of power at your disposal means you can use the battery when you need to be quieter and the diesel engine if you need a lot of power, for instance in a strong current or wind, so you get the best of both worlds. And the batteries are recharged using the electric drive when running the combustion engine. Both main drive [48v] and domestic [12v] boat batteries can also be charged via a charger that is plugged into the mains shore supply.

Choosing Hybrid Boat Batteries

If you already have a hybrid battery on your boat then making a note of the details of that battery will make it easy to choose a replacement. If you want to increase the capacity of your battery then you will need an idea of how much extra you want.

If however you are planning to convert to hybrid power, you will need some additional information. These include the details of the electric motor, the charger facilities available and your expected cruising time in hours.

Traction vs Leisure Batteries

You can discharge traction batteries down to a point where there is only 20% left, but leisure batteries can only be discharged down to about 50%. This means that you will get more power to use from a traction battery than from a leisure battery with the same rated amp hour capacity.

Maintaining Hybrid Boat Batteries

systems are available together with all the equipment required to maintain your system.

Don’t allow a traction battery to discharge below 80% and charge it fully each time to extend the battery life.

Getting Your Hybrid Boat Batteries Fitted

Batteries can be located in most places on your boat, however situating them in an accessible area near the motor and controller gear is the most suitable choice. You will however need to consider the weight of the battery in relation to the balance of your boat on the water in order for the boat to be stable. The batteries can be installed in closed spaces as long as they are fitted with automatic topping with gas venting equipment or maintenance free GEL, which gives you more storage options.

If you are planning to fit the batteries yourself we are very happy to discuss what is involved with you. We are also able to fit the batteries for you providing your vessel is accessible. We would need to have enough room to manoeuvre around the boat in order to install the batteries and will also need parking for our mobile workshop. We are unable to work on the street and will require permission from the landowner in relation to where the boat is situated.
